The dining room at Darbunah Restaurant

دربونة Darbunah

A narrow lane in Baghdad is called a darbunah. Ours runs off West Warren Avenue — clay-oven bread, lamb that leaves the bone, and tea that arrives without being asked for.

Inside

Cooked the long way, on purpose.

Darbunah is small. Cozy, not cramped — earth-toned walls, low talk, the clink of shared plates. The art on the walls is a nod to Shari' Al-Mutanabbi, Baghdad's street of books and poets, and the music playing over it is the classical Iraqi kind, not background noise.

The kitchen keeps a real tanoor. Bread goes onto its clay wall and comes off blistered; whole chickens and zubaidi fish are cooked against the same heat. Quzi lamb is left alone until it gives way at the touch of a spoon. Nothing here is quick, and the wait is the point.

Come hungry, order to share, and let the table fill up. Guests tell us $20–30 of food feeds a family and sends people home with boxes. Tea at the end is on the house.

Guests keep calling it the best they have had. Smooth, lemony, no garlic bite needed — under warm ground meat and olive oil.

  • A large family tray for sharing

Half a tanoor chicken, quzi lamb, zubaidi fish, three rices, two stews, salads. One tray, one table, no decisions.
